PhD (Building Surveying) - HBP

OVERVIEW

Doctor of Philosophy in Building Surveying are research programmes offered throughout the year. These programmes are offered as full-time and part-time modes to qualified Malaysian and international students to do independent research supervised by respective lecturers in various specialisations in the field of Building Surveying.

As the concern on sustainability issues in built environment increased, these programmes focus on the building control and performance to achieve a safe, friendly and well maintained building and infrastructure. These programmes include total asset management practice, which begins at the planning stage until the disposal of assets. Building control and performance covers pre, execution and post construction. It also encompasses the operational life cycle of building performance and restoration. At the end of the programme, graduates are able to:

i. contribute knowledge and competent skills in conducting research in the field of Built Environment

ii. integrate information and knowledge of the theoretical principles and scientific method to solve problems

iii. demonstrate effective communication in the Built Environment community and teamwork

iv. encourage readiness for career development, professional and lifelong learning

v. supervise research and conduct research under supervision

vi. develop and apply relevant techniques, resources and equipments

vii. promote awareness and responsibility in social, health and safety, ethics and legal issues

viii. lead research in professional and ethical manner

Upon graduation, postgraduates can pursue their careers in academic as well as industry-based research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should possess the following:

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s (First Class Honours or CGPA >3.67/4) degree in a related area.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS


(Applicable for International Applicants Only)

  • A minimum score of 550 in Paper-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
  • A minimum score of 213 in Computer-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
  • A minimum score of 80 in Internet-Based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or
  • A minimum score of Band 6.0 in IELTS (international English Language Testing System) or

*      The applicant graduated from institutions of higher learning which the language of instruction is English, or

*      English courses offered by the British Council, or

*      English courses offered by the School of Languages, Literacy and Translation, USM, or

*      English courses from selected universities/colleges

(*) The level of approval and relevant courses should be identified and approved by the Council of Graduate Studied in advance.
